BOU’s Dr. Adam Mugume Delivers Lecture on the Role of Banks in the Financial System
Yesterday (3rd September 2026), the Executive Director of Research and Policy at the Bank of Uganda (BoU), Dr. Adam Mugume, delivered a guest lecture to Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Year III Law of Banking class on the role of banks in the financial system.
The lecture provided students with practical insights into the relationship between banking operations, financial stability and the wider economy.
Dr. Mugume highlighted key functions of banks, including credit creation, payment services and monetary policy transmission, and explained how these activities contribute to economic growth. He also examined the risks associated with banking activities and their potential impact on financial sector stability.
The lecture further explored the role of the Central Bank in monitoring and managing these risks through effective regulation and supervision.
Course Instructor, Associate Professor Winifred Tarinyeba Kiryabwire noted that understanding the role and unique nature of banks is essential for students before engaging with the regulatory frameworks governing banks and banking activities.
