SoL Newsletter – April to June

It gives me great pleasure to present the April–June 2026 edition of the Makerere University School of Law Newsletter. This issue captures another remarkable quarter in our journey of advancing legal education, research, and public service while strengthening our position as a leading law school in Africa.
During this period, the School continued to deepen its engagement with the judiciary, academia, government, and international partners. We were privileged to host the Chief Justices of Uganda and Zambia, whose visit reaffirmed the enduring relationship between legal education and judicial practice, while opening new avenues for collaboration in Alternative Dispute Resolution, legal research, and professional training.
The quarter also saw the Vice Chancellor commend the School for attaining the University’s strategic target of 40 percent graduate student enrolment, recognizing our growing contribution to graduate training, research excellence, and knowledge generation. This achievement reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff, students, and partners in building a vibrant academic community committed to addressing national, regional, and global challenges.
Our commitment to experiential learning remained at the forefront through activities of the Public Interest Law Clinic, including the Clinical Legal Education Moot Competition and the inaugural Criminal Justice System Conference. These initiatives continue to bridge theory and practice, equipping our students with the skills, ethics, and professional values required to serve society effectively.
As higher education embraces competency-based learning, the School has taken deliberate steps to strengthen the capacity of its academic staff to deliver innovative, student-centred legal education. We also welcomed the Committee on Legal Education and Training for its annual inspection, whose engagement affirmed our commitment to continuous quality improvement and maintaining the highest standards of legal education.
The stories featured in this newsletter demonstrate our unwavering commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, innovation, and meaningful engagement with society. They also celebrate the achievements of the many individuals whose dedication continues to shape the future of the legal profession.
