Interview: Charcoal Consumption in East Africa Dilemma

Dr. Sylvie Namwase, Lecturer at SoL was interviewed by the Danish Development Research
Network on Charcoal Consumption in East Africa: A Climate Change Dilemma. Dr. Susan
Mlangwa, Deputy Country Director for Clinton Health Access Initiative, Tanzania was also
interviewed. Dr. Namwase and Dr. Mlangwa explained that, the fight against climate change
demands that nations decarbonise their energy grids, but this is transition puts contradictory
on many Global South countries. Charcoal is the primary energy source for households in
Uganda and Tanzania, dictating the social and political economy of livelihoods, gender
relations, informal economies, ethnic relations and private sector growth. Therefore, a
sudden transition away from charcoal risks overlooking such complex dynamics.
