Mak School of Law Hosts students from Royal Giant High School, Mityana

The School of Law, Makerere University hosted about 80 students from Royal Giant High School, Mityana, on 4th October 2024, for a familiarization tour. These were mainly from S.6 class, and were received by the Public Relations Office, School of Law, represented my Ms. Mariam Kasemiire.

During their visit, they held an interactive meeting with Prof. Christopher Mbazira, School of Law, who responded to questions, on their expectations of the visit. Below are some of the questions asked by students during the meeting.

Requirements to join Law School

When asked about the requirements to get into law school, Prof. Mbazira highlighted the need for one to sit pre-entry exams before joining the Law School.

“Entry to law school in makerere is a bit unique compared to entry to other courses for about ten years now, because it requires one to sit a pre-entry exam, and admission depends on the schools we get at a pass mark of 50, although the 50 may get you into the law school or it may not be depending on the performance of the year, he said”.

He reiterated on the nature of pre-entry exams, noting the broadness and inter-disciplinary nature of the exam designed to test a number of competences that are necessary for one to join the law profession.  

According to Prof. Mbazira, the nature of pre-entry exam is characterized of qualities key to the law profession, including: English, composition, comprehension, aptitude, current affairs, etc.

What do lawyers do?

When asked on what lawyers do, Prof. Mbazira highlighted law as the most diverse profession, involving doing so many other things. According to Prof. Mbazira, Lawyers do whatever the law does, and whatever is gathered by the law requires the expertise of lawyers.

The interaction ended with a tour around the new School of Law Building.
