SoL Staff recognised and appointed by International Institutions

The Makerere University School of Law (SoL) takes pride in the quality of our faculty, most of whom are internationally recognised distinguished legal academics in their respective disciplines. Recently our staff were appointed to boards or received awards as highlighted below.

Assoc. Professor Winfred Tarinyeba Kiryabwire

Dr. Winnie Tarinyeba, Associate Professor in the Department Commercial Law at the Makerere University School of Law (SoL) was appointed member on the Advisory Board of the Centre for Business Law and Practice (CBLP), School of Law, University of Leeds, UK.

In addition, Assoc. Professor Tarinyeba was appointed for a second term to the International Insolvency Institute (III) Board of Directors. She was first appointed to the board in 2023. On the board is a member of the Academic and Partnerships Committee. The III is a global membership of leading professionals, scholars, and judges invited into membership based on their expertise in international insolvency law and practice, dedicated to the development and improvement of legal systems and processes that govern domestic and international insolvencies and business restructurings in order to promote economic wellbeing, investment, and the efficient administration of justice.

Assoc. Professor Ronald Naluwairo

Dr. Ronald Naluwairo, Associate Professor and Dean-SoL was appointed Member of the Governing Council of the Judicial Training Institute (JTI), Uganda. The JTI was established under Section 19(1) of the Administration of the Judiciary Act tp provide specialised and continuous training to the judiciary service and other persons or institutions for improved skills and enhanced performance. The JTI Governing Council is responsible for providing policy guidance that enables the Institute to operate effectively.

Dr. Anthony C.K. Kakooza

Dr. Anthony C.K. Kakooza, Senior Lecturer & Head- Department of Commercial Law was recognised by the World Trademark Review (WTR) as a WTR Global Leader for 2025. The WTR Global Leaders bring together the world’s corporate trademark experts. Only 14% of the people ranked in WTR 100 are selected to future as a Global Leader, it is therefore a significant endorsement for Dr. Kakooza to be recognised as a Global Leader in the practice of Trademark law. In 2020, WTR 100 branded Dr. Kakooza as the “Godfather of Intellectual Property law in Uganda”.

Mr. Robert Kirunda

Mr. Robert Kirunda, Lecturer at the School of Law was appointed a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). He is the second Ugandan to receive this appointment. The PCA is an intergovernmental organisation with headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands. It was established in 1899 to facilitate arbitration and othe forms of dispute resolution between states. The PCA has developed into a modern, multi-faceted arbitral institution perfectly situated to meet the evolving dispute resolution needs of the international community.
