SoL and UWE talk collaboration

On 20th October 2025, Makerere University School of Law (SoL) hosted a delegation from the University of West England (UWE), UK. On arrival at SoL, the delegation from UWE were received by Assoc. Professor Ronald Naluwairo, Dean – SoL.

The UWE delegation was led by Ms. Jo Midgley, Deputy Vice of UWE accompanied by Prof. Emmanuel Adukwu, Dean of Students, Ms. Mian Ng, Lead for Global Partnerships in Social & Cultural Engagements, Mr. Jimi Ogunnusi, International Director-Africa & Africa Strategy Lead and Dr. Anne Eason, Associate Director of Policing.

A meeting was held between SoL and delegation from UWE to discuss possible areas of collaboration following signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Makerere University and UWE. The meeting was attended by Dean-SoL, Heads of Department-SoL and administrative staff from the School.

In his remarks, Assoc. Professor welcomed the UWE team to SoL sharing highlights about the history of the School, statistics of the school and study programmes offered. Explaining the various research initiatives at the School, he expressed his hope that the two institutions would define areas where they can collaborate for mutual benefit.

In her communication, Ms. Jo Midgley expressed her appreciation of the warm welcome to the School; she highlighted that they have a Law School under their College of Business and Law. She explained that beside the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme, UWE conducts bar course & solicitor training, several specialised Master of Laws (LLM), Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and Doctoral degrees.

Following discussions between the teams refugee law, policing, joint research& publications, CPD, student & staff exchanges, community engagements for students were highlighted as areas for further discussion.

It was agreed that collaboration between the Law Schools will go ahead. The UWE delegation will share notes from this meeting with the Dean-School of Law at UWE who will engage further on the areas highlighted.

‘We hope for a long-lasting relationship between UWE and Makerere University mutually beneficial to both institutions’, said Ms. Midgley in her closing remarks.

Dr. Daniel Ruhweza, Head-Law and Jurisprudence at School gave a closing prayer to the meeting. He also moved a vote of thanks on behalf of SoL, he said, ‘on behalf of the SoL, we have the deepest gratitude for your visit. We look forward to further discussion a hope all that we have talked about comes to fruition’.
