Makerere Debating Union

The Makerere Debating Union (MDU) is a body established almost a decade ago to harness and develop critical thinking skills amongst the general students’ fraternity. The body hosts a series of activities including participating in debate competitions as well as holding topical discussions on matters of national importance. In so doing, MDU has been able to groom young people into instrumental personalities who have influenced the University in various ways and this has equally been the case at the School of Law.

Our alumni’s contributions speak for themselves. They are so numerous that it is not possible to list all of them here. Some of the present milestones however, include the fact that the current University Prime Minister Mr. Luyombo Abbas is a former debater at MDU. The current Law school leadership is equally composed of a number of our former and continuing members to mention the least, the president himself Mr. Nsaawa Grace and the Rt. Hon Speaker Mr. Mayanja Benson. Mr. Bbosa Price who serves as the current GRC is also a member of MDU.

MDU has also expounded its influence to a number of bodies at Law School. When it comes to mooting for instance, the body has at least had one individual on the teams that have represented Law School at the prestigious Jessup moot competition in the last three years

A lot can be written about the prestige of Makerere Debating Union; one thing that cuts across in all stories though, is the level of consistence it has showcased over the years. Debating to glow.
