Supreme Court accepts Makerere University law dons' application to be "Friends of the Court"

 

The Supreme Court has allowed nine Makerere University law lecturers to be neutral advisers in the presidential election petition filed by former presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi. The nine justices hearing the petition ruled that the lecturers had the requisite expertise to advise them on matters of law. But the court dismissed an application filed by eight civil society organisations on grounds that they didn’t have the expertise.

Students face Constitutional Court as Makerere law school makes 50

 

On Friday, twelve students from the Makerere University school of law and many others had their first ever experience of the Constitutional Court. This was during a moot court exercise presided over by a bench of four justices led by Deputy Chief Justice Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo. The event was part of celebration of 50 years of Makerere University School of Law.

Makerere School of Law Introduces Masters Programme on Extractives

 

Law Scholars from across East Africa have welcomed the proposal to introduce of a masters law program with a course in extractives, policy and practice in Makerere University. They say it will to nurture home grown experts in the extractives rather than relying on foreign experts in negotiations. Principal of Makerere University School of Law Prof Christopher Mbazira says there is need to prepare the next crop of lawyers to advise government on the extractives industry.
