Dean's Message

Welcome to the School of Law, Makerere University, the pioneer Law training centre in the region. Having been in existence for more than 40 years, we have established ourselves as a leader in legal scholarship and research preparing tomorrow’s future legal practitioners with rigor and passion.

The School of Law is a world known School with a cast of enviable ability. It is no doubt that seeking legal education with us remains a top choice for most students in the greater East African region.

This is further bolstered by our creative teaching methodology and interdisciplinary focus of our research curriculum. We boast of a multicultural mix of clients hailing from all over the region, which offers a holistic legal and other education experience.

The school of Law offers programs that include a four year Bachelor of Laws Degree (L.L.B), a two year Master of Laws program (L.L.M) as well as a Doctorate program (L.LD).

We have over fifty dedicated and experienced members of staff that include Professors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers as well as Assistant lecturers who daily engage in knowledge transfer through a number of ways that include lectures and case methods. E-Learning has been integrated in the School’s programmes. Opportunities for practical work are available in Clinical Legal Education and in the recently introduced Field Attachment program, which helps to expose our students to various ways through which they can practically learn.

The students of Law are drawn from all over the country and the region. While at the School of Law, students are given an opportunity to engage in both academic and other activities like sports, religious activities and Politics at this level. Students author the Makerere Law Journal annually and this engages their scholarly skills in research and editing. A number of them participate in conferences, moot courts, as well as public discourses. Most of the student activities are done through the student association, Makerere Law Society.

With a regular review of the curriculum to keep pace with the changing legal environment, the School’s curriculum has programs that are tailored to produce a more relevant and all round legal professional.

Our alumni are having a positive impact on the lives of millions of people in their capacities as Advocates, Judicial officers, Legislators, Educators and Entrepreneurs. The Alumni are spread out all over the Region and effort is on to attract more and more involvement of the Alumni in the programs at the School of Law as a means of giving back to the alma mater as well as being part of the growth of the School of Law.
